WHAT IS LEARNING?

November 10, 2022
WHAT IS LEARNING?

Learning is purely natural. It is an ability that is common to all and it occurs daily. Even though the activity of learning cannot be seen or touched, it can be observed through behaviour.

According to Aristotle, we are born “tabula rasa”, meaning that our minds are like a clean slate when we are born. What this means is that whatever information is found within the mind is as a result of learning which comes about through experience and perception, especially in the early days. Therefore, there is nothing like INNATISM. No one was born with the answer to 2 + 2, you have to learn it. In addition, the result must be relatively permanent and reproducible for us to say that learning has occurred.

So what are you learning at this time? This can be in school, home, internet environment or simply a skill…all these are classified as your experiences. And the knowledge or information you are acquiring must be relatively permanent in you and reproducible. If you can reproduce it consistently, then learning has occurred. If no, then you need to go through the process again.

POINTS TO REMEMBER

 1. Learning occurs through experiences, for example; studies
 2. The information acquired must be relatively permanent in you
 3. It must be reproducible
